In addition to saving money, when you sign up mention Baltimore Biomass and Clean Currents will donate $10 to Sustainable Urban Infrastructures, the Non-profit that manages Baltimore Biomass. You don't even have to live in Baltimore, signing up is open to anyone in the BG&E or PEPCO territories. So, do the right thing today. More information about Clean Currents C-Green

Chesapeake Green (C-Green) is a new carbon neutral electricity option for people in the Maryland and Washington, DC regions. C-Green combines standard electricity from the Mid Atlantic grid (the PJM grid) with Renewable Energy Credits ("RECs" or "green tags") from wind power farms situated across the United States. These electricity sources are then bundled together and supplied by Washington Gas Energy Services, a licensed retail energy supplier in Maryland and DC. This bundled wind energy product helps fight global warming by offsetting the carbon emissions from your electricity use with clean, renewable wind power.

All you need is your PEPCO or BG&E account number! (Note: If you don't know your account number, you can find out by calling Pepco at 202-833-7500 or BGE at 1-800-685-0123.)

Utility Service Area
50% 1-Year 50% 2-Year 100% 1-Year 100% 2-Year
For Maryland BG&E Customers 11.3¢ per kWh 11.3¢ per kWh 11.8¢ per kWh 11.8¢ per kWh
For Maryland PEPCO Customers 11.1¢ per kWh 11.2¢ per kWh 11.6¢ per kWh 11.7¢ per kWh
For District of Columbia PEPCO Customers 10.8¢ per kWh 10.9¢ per kWh 11.3¢ per kWh 11.4¢ per kWh

Clean Currents wind power rates cover energy generation and transmission charges. Your rate will stay the same for the length of your contract. Power distribution however, is a regulated market so your current utility (BG&E or PEPCO) is still responsible for the reliability of your power, power line maintenance, and billing.

Super Green 2.0 (October 17, 2009)

Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Inc and Baltimore Biomass are pleased to present SUPER GREEN 2.0 a day of fun and education based in sustainability. October 17, 2009 9:30am until 2:30pm. Just like the Last Super Green, this event takes place at 2800 Sisson Street, Baltimore MD 21211. (The Mill Valley General Store)

Super Green 2.0 will feature work shops that teach attendees how to heat their homes using locally grown sustainable Biomass, buy renewable electricity and utilize solar power, inexpensively make there home more energy efficient and even the right way to plant a tree this fall. Each of the 45min. workshops will be held at 10:00am, 11:00am, noon, and 1:00pm. This will give attendees the opportunity to see all of the workshops with time in between to mingle.

According to George L Peters Jr, President of SUI Inc who runs the Baltimore Biomass project, "We have been working hard to promote biomass in Baltimore for just over a year now, offering free workshops on biomass every week during the winter months and once a month during the summer. After the wonderful success of our first Super Green event in August of this year we thought that we just had to have another. Although we spend a lot of our time promoting Biomass as an organization, we believe in and support a number of other sustainable initiatives. We thought that it would be a cool idea to have a number of them get together for one fun event."

In addition to the workshops there will be food and drink for purchase, featuring Mick "the Pirate" of Whisky Island Fame. We will also be giving away "gift bags" to the first 100 people that pre-register for the event. The gift bags will feature packs of Botanical Interests flower, vegetable and herb seeds, DIY hand outs, a free tree courtesy of Tree Baltimore and more, so register now! Go on it's free. Doors open at 9:00am.

Pre-season Memberships Announced (May 01, 2009)

Baltimore Biomass announced today that it would now be accepting what they are calling ¨Pre-season Memberships¨ until August, 15th 2009.

Basically what this means is that people interested in becoming members of Baltimore Biomass can reserve their spot in the Baltimore Biomass program now with out having to commit all of the money required up front. Current members of Baltimore Biomass, who have an account in good standing, are billed in late August just before the beginning of the heating season. At that time those members are required to make a deposit so that Baltimore Biomass has the money it needs to make the first bulk purchase of Corn for the heating season.

Those members who already have an account balances from the previous heating season are guaranteed the place in the buyer´s cooperative for the following season. When we send out their bill they a responsible for having $300.00 for biomass, and their $25.00 yearly membership fee available in their account. If they had $75.00 left in their personal account form last heating season, they send us a check for $250.00 and then they are set to start the year. A member´s personal account acts as a debit system allowing that member to pick up Biomass (corn) at their convenience and the cost of that Biomass is subtracted from their personal account.

We are now offering individuals and businesses that would like to secure there spot in the Baltimore Biomass program the same benefit. A Pre-season member can pay a $100.00 deposit now (a $75.00 one time application fee + a $25.00 membership fee) and then we will bill them for there biomass money just before the heating season in Late August. Once you have paid your $100.00 fee, you´re a member and your spot is guaranteed.

You can down load a Baltimore Biomass membership contract and the Baltimore Biomass Buyers Cooperative rules here. Baltimore Biomass Membership.

$1,500 Tax Credit for Biomass Stoves (February 17, 2009)

The 2009 Economic Stimulus legislation signed into law February 17, 2009 by President Obama includes a 30% tax credit (up to $1,500) for the purchase in 2009 and 2010 of a 75% efficient biomass stove as measured using a lower heating value. The tax credit provisions are extended improvements of the legislation that passed in October 2008. The major changes are an extension of the credit to 2010 and the increase on the credit from $300 to 30% of the total cost.

While the new tax credit takes effect immediately, the Internal Revenue Service has not issued the guidelines for determining what stoves meet the efficiency requirements to qualify for the credit or how a manufacturer will qualify their products. These guidelines are expected by April 30, 2009, however the credit applies to all qualifying stoves sold in 2009. Once the IRS guidelines are issued, wood and pellet stove manufacturers will test their stoves and will notify their retailers about their models that qualify.

According to Jack Goldman, president of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, This stimulus legislation supports renewable energy and will help consumers control their winter heating costs. With the long-term rise in home heating prices, this tax credit will help alleviate some of the initial cost for those consumers wanting to purchase a 75%-efficient stove next year.

4 reasons you should burn corn to heat your home. (November 30, 2008)

Corn is renewable, climate neutral, economical and made in the USA.

Corn is a crop. When you want more, Farmers plant more. With proper land management practices, it can be grown sustainably by the same local farms year after year. No war needed.

Burning corn is climate neutral when it is harvested sustainably. That means that corn only releases as much CO2 when it is burned as it absorbed when it was grown, which makes it a climate-friendly fuel source. Our Corn is contractually grown by Maryland Farmers using sustainable practices for a small carbon footprint and net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Families who burn corn are saving hundreds of dollars per year on heating. Corn produces more Btu per dollar than electricity, oil, natural gas, or propane. That is the simple truth. Even with today's soaring grain prices, Corn used as fuel to heat your home still costs 71% less then electricity, 64% less than propane, 58% less than oil and 32% less then Natural Gas. Click here to see our August 2008 cost comparison chart.

Corn-burning and multi-fuel stoves are a great way to help reduce our nations dependency on imported fossil fuels. Corn is grown here in the USA not imported from a foreign nation. It keeps Farmers working and helps keep our economy strong. Our corn is grown right here in Maryland by local family owned farms, so the money you spend goes right back into our local economy.

Joining Baltimore Biomass helps you save money, protect the environment, support our local economy and our national security. We would love to have you as a member. Download a membership application, and join today.
